Abstract

Trace fossils or biogenic sedimentary structures are autochthonous indicators of environmental conditions,and hence trace fossil communities have been the subject of palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographic investigation for
several decadesFour aspects are discussed:(1)distinction between terrestrial and marine trace fossil communities;(2)
trace fossil communities of the transitional zone and recognition of shoreline;(3)the applications of some ichnofacies in palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographic studies and recent advances in investigation of Skolithos,Cruziana,Zoophycos and Nereites ichnofacies;and(4)trace fossil communities for interpretation of some geological events,including interpretation of some sedimentary events and recognition of anoxic environments

About author: Yang Shipu, male, born in 1925, graduated from the Geology Department of Qinghua University in 1950 From 1955 to 1959 he was a graduate student at Moskovsky University in the former USSR. Now he is a professor of China University of Geosciences, and engages in Carboniferous stratigraphy and brachiopods, palaeoecology and ichnology
